I. About XMU
Xiamen University (XMU) was founded in 1921 by the renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee with the vision of becoming “a university for the world.” Since its inception, it has embodied the spirit of “pursuing excellence and striving for perfection,” cultivating a rich cultural heritage and fostering an academic environment dedicated to exceptional teaching and research. The University has steadfastly upheld Mr. Tan’s founding principles and promoted its esteemed ethos of “patriotism, progressiveness, self-improvement, and science.” Over the years, it has been designated a National Key University and included in China’s “Project 211,” “Project 985,” and the national “Double First-Class” initiative.
Following more than a century of robust growth, XMU has evolved into a comprehensive institution with a full spectrum of disciplines, a distinguished faculty, and a leading position in China alongside its broad international influence, solidifying its status as an ideal venue for nurturing talent and pioneering scientific research.
II. Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs at XMU
XMU was among the first institutions in China authorized to establish postdoctoral research centers. Acknowledging postdoctoral fellows as a key source of future academic leaders and faculty members, the University currently operates 36 such centers spanning a wide range of disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, medicine, economics, management, and law. These centers are supported by a comprehensive and integrated training framework.
XMU boasts an eminent team of collaborative supervisors, led by academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), along with other nationally recognized high-level experts. They provide postdoctoral researchers with high-caliber academic guidance. A testament to this mentorship is that some former postdoctoral fellows have advanced to become academicians of the CAS, or have taken on influential roles as leading scholars, principal investigators, and key academic figures at top universities and research institutions in China and abroad. This sustained cycle of talent cultivation and succession reflects the University’s robust and dynamic academic ecosystem.
